Check your car’s true GPS speed — verify your dashboard

Online Car Speedometer — Check Your True Car Speed
See your car’s real GPS speed in mph or km/h — verify your dashboard speedometer, or use HUD mode as a windshield display at night.
How to use this car speedometer
- Mount your phone safely or have a passenger hold it — never operate the phone while driving.
- Tap START and allow location access.
- Drive normally: live speed, max, average and distance update in real time.
- At night, tap HUD Mode and lay the phone flat on the dashboard — the mirrored digits reflect in your windshield like a head-up display.
Is your car's speedometer accurate?
Most car speedometers deliberately read 3–10% higher than your true speed — regulations in many countries require they never under-read. GPS measures your actual ground speed, so this tool is a simple way to check your dashboard's error: drive at a steady indicated 100 km/h and compare with the GPS reading. A GPS reading of 94–97 km/h is completely normal.
When a GPS car speedometer is useful
- Faulty or broken dashboard speedometer — use GPS as a temporary backup.
- Changed tire size — larger or smaller tires make the dashboard inaccurate; GPS shows the truth.
- Night driving — HUD mode projects your speed onto the windshield.
- Speed-limit discipline — set a Speed alert at the limit and get a beep if you drift over.
Safety first
This tool is a guide, not a replacement for your vehicle's instruments. Set everything up before driving, keep your eyes on the road, and always obey posted speed limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is GPS speed lower than my car's speedometer?
Car speedometers are legally calibrated to read slightly high (typically 3–10%) so they never under-report. GPS shows your true ground speed.
Can I use this if my car's speedometer is broken?
Yes, as a temporary aid — GPS gives an accurate live reading. Get the vehicle instrument repaired for legal compliance.
What is HUD mode?
HUD mode mirrors the digits so that when the phone lies flat on the dashboard at night, the reflection in the windshield reads correctly — like a head-up display.
Does it work at highway speeds?
Yes. GPS speed is accurate at any road speed, typically within 1–2 km/h with a clear sky view.
Is it legal to use a phone speedometer while driving?
Mount the phone or set it up before departing, and never handle it while driving. Follow your local laws on device use in vehicles.
